Artist Nguyen Nhu Duc (artistic name Duc Bet), formally trained in fine arts, chose a quiet lifestyle, in no rush to chase the spotlight. In 2014, he left the bustling city for Hoi An—a "peaceful haven" that nourishes his gentle artistic soul, where he started a family, made a living, and tirelessly painted. Duc Bet creates art like planting a seed: from meticulous sketches to layers of paint applied over months, or even years. For him, painting is not merely about completing a piece, but a journey of preserving emotions.
Born in 1980 in Hanoi, Nguyen Nhu Duc went through years of making a living across various occupations before committing fully to painting in Hoi An. The heritage city was initially a promise of financial stability, but it was through those years of slow living here that he rediscovered his true artistic identity.
A practitioner of Magical Realism (Surrealist Realism), Nguyen Nhu Duc captures his inner world through vivid depictions of humanity and nature structured in irrational ways. Viewers easily recognize familiar motifs in his paintings faces, arms, the moon yet they are brought together like a dream, blurring the boundaries between reality and the subconscious.
In June 2025, he presented his solo exhibition titled "Mother Earth," featuring over 30 oil paintings created during his 11 years in Hoi An, held at the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts in Hanoi.
